Transfer Channel Ownership

Transfer channel ownership to another member from Channel Central or /transfer.

Channel ownership can be transferred to another member. The current owner becomes an operator and the target receives owner status.

When to use it

Transfer ownership when you hand a channel over to someone else, for example when you step back from running it. You keep operator status, so you can still help. If you only want to share control, give the other person owner status instead and stay an owner yourself.

Channel Central

Owners can open Channel Central's General tab, choose Transfer Ownership, enter the target nickname, and confirm the transfer.

Command

/transfer <nickname>
/transfer Alice Make Alice the owner and become an operator
/mode +q Alice Make Alice an owner

The command works on the channel you are looking at. Everyone in the channel sees the mode changes.

Rules

  • Only the current channel owner (~) can transfer ownership
  • The target nickname must be present in the channel
  • This cannot be undone without the new owner's cooperation
  • If the person is not in the channel, the transfer fails and nothing changes.
  • Ranks last while people stay in the channel. In an unregistered channel, if you leave after the transfer while others are still inside, you come back as a regular member.
  • In a registered channel, a transfer does not change the ChanServ founder or access list. Ranks given on joining still come from that list.
