RetroHexChat supports the standard 16-color IRC palette for both foreground and background text.
Using Colors
Click the Color button in the formatting toolbar, then choose a color from the grid.
The Color button is inside the formatting toolbar. Click the Formatting Toolbar button beside the message box to open it.
The color grid shows the 16 colors in two rows of eight. Point at a swatch to see its name. Clicking a swatch inserts the color code and its number at the cursor.
The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+D inserts the color code without a number. Type the color number right after it.
Color Palette
Each color has a number from 0 to 15. The names below are the ones the color grid shows.
0White1Black2Navy3Green4Red5Brown6Purple7Orange8Yellow9Light Green10Teal11Light Cyan12Blue13Pink14Grey15Light Grey
Text and background colors
The first number sets the text color. Add a comma and a second number to set the background color too.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+D in the message box.
- Type 4,8 for red text on a yellow background.
- Type your text and press Enter to send it.
To end the color in the middle of a message, press Ctrl+Shift+D again and do not type a number. To end every format at once, press Ctrl+Shift+X.
Rules and limits
- A color number has one or two digits. A two-digit number above 15 is read as one digit, and the second digit stays in your text.
- If your text starts with a digit, that digit can join the color number. Write the color with two digits, such as 04, to avoid this.
- The Color button and the color grid appear only when the message format is IRC.
- In a channel with mode +c, the server removes all formatting, colors included, from new messages.
- Choose View > Strip Formatting to read every message without colors. This changes only your own view.
- Only the first 128 formatting codes in a message are shown. The rest are removed from the display.
