RetroHexChat uses fixed keyboard shortcuts for all actions. All shortcuts use Ctrl+Shift combinations to avoid conflicting with browser shortcuts.
Quick Reference
Press Ctrl+Shift+/ to open the Shortcut Cheatsheet at any time for a complete list of all available shortcuts.
You can also open it from the Help menu. Choose Shortcut Cheatsheet.
Default Shortcuts

| Ctrl+Shift+1 … Ctrl+Shift+9 | Switch to the channel or PM at that position. |
During a conference, the arrow keys with Ctrl+Shift control your microphone, camera, layout and focus. The cheatsheet lists each one.
Keys Without Ctrl+Shift
Press Escape to close the topmost dialog or menu. In the chat input, the arrow keys, Tab and Enter have their own jobs. The Smart Input topic explains them.
Rules and Limits
- The shortcuts cannot be changed. Every user has the same set.
- The global shortcuts avoid combinations that the browser needs, such as copy, paste and new tab.
- No function key is bound. The browser keeps them, including the key that opens the browser help.
