P2P Sessions in Chat

A P2P session is a direct connection between two people that carries a call, file transfers and games at once. It begins in a private message and runs in a browser tab of its own — the chat has no window for one.

The card is the door

Type /p2p <nick>, or press P2P Session in a private message, and the request goes into that conversation straight away. Nothing is asked of you first. The line it writes carries the session's own address and draws a card, and that card is the way in for both of you: the person who asked opens the same door as the person who was asked.

The invited person can refuse instead. Decline sits on the session's entry in the conversation toolbar and ends the invitation without entering anything. Nothing in that toolbar is a door: the invite card in the private message is the way in, for both of you.

Following it opens a tab

The card opens the session beside the conversation, never on top of it, so the chat you were reading stays exactly where it is. You arrive in the starting room, where both of you pick devices and press Ready before anything is negotiated.

More than one, one tab each

You can hold a session with several people at the same time, each in a tab of its own. The only session refused is a second one with somebody you already have one with. Nothing has to be ended to start another.

The conversation is the private message

What you type during a session is an ordinary private message, saved like any other. What the session does — request sent, connected, file received, game score, who ended it — is written into the conversation as P2P lines, so the story of it survives the session without turning the transcript into a control surface.

While a session exists, the conversation shows a badge for it: how far along it is, and whether you already have its tab open. If you do, the badge takes you to that tab rather than opening a second one, because a second tab of a session moves the session into it.
