Channels

Channels are chat rooms where multiple users can talk. Channel names begin with #.

Everyone in a channel sees the same conversation. A channel usually has a theme, a topic shown at the top, and a few people who look after it.

Joining a Channel

/join #channel-name
/join #elixir Join a public channel
/join #secret mykey Join a channel that has a key

If the channel does not exist yet, joining creates it. The first person in a new channel becomes its owner and can set its modes.

Leaving a Channel

/part [#channel-name]

If no channel is specified, you leave the current channel.

You can add a short goodbye after the channel name. Everyone in the channel sees it.

/part #elixir Goodbye!

Listing Channels

/list

Or use the Channel List button in the toolbar. Invite-only (+i) channels are marked with a +i badge; select one and choose Request Access... to send a knock request to its operators.

Secret channels are not listed for people outside them. Private channels are listed without their name.

Rules and limits

  • A channel name starts with # and has no spaces. It can be up to 50 characters long.
  • You can be in a limited number of channels at once. The default is 10, and the server administrator can change it.
  • A channel can refuse you because of a ban, a key, a user limit, invite-only mode or registered-only mode.
  • An unregistered channel closes when the last person leaves, and its topic and modes are lost. Register it with ChanServ to keep it, its settings and its access list.
