+l User Limit

Limits the maximum number of users that can be in the channel.

When to use it

Use a user limit to keep a room small. It helps when a channel is meant for a team, a class or a game group. It also slows down a crowd that arrives all at once.

Usage

/mode +l 25 Set limit to 25 users
/mode -l Remove user limit

The command changes the channel you are looking at. You do not type the channel name.

Channel Central

Operators can also open Channel Central, go to the Modes tab, tick Limit, type the number and choose Apply Modes.

Rules and limits

  • Only channel operators and owners can set or remove the limit.
  • The limit must be a whole number greater than zero. If the number is not valid, the limit does not change.
  • When the channel has as many members as the limit, the next person who tries to join is refused with a message that the channel is full.
  • Lowering the limit never removes anyone. People already inside stay in the channel.
  • An invitation does not get around the limit. Bots in the channel count as members.
  • In a registered channel the limit is saved and comes back after a restart.
