When set, only channel members can send messages to the channel. Non-members attempting to send will receive an error. Service messages (NickServ, ChanServ) are not affected.
When to use it
The mode comes from classic IRC, where people outside a channel could send text into it. Set it when you want the channel modes to state clearly that only members may speak.
Usage
/mode +n Enable no external messages /mode -n Disable no external messages
The command changes the channel you are looking at. You do not type the channel name.
How it works
- Even without this mode, a person must be in the channel to send messages to it. Someone who is not a member is always refused.
- With the mode set, the refusal says that the channel does not accept external messages.
- Members are not affected. To limit what members can say, use moderated mode instead.
Rules and limits
- Only channel operators and owners can set or remove this mode.
- A new channel starts without this mode. In a registered channel the mode is saved and comes back after a restart.
