+t Topic Lock

Restrict topic changes to channel operators.

When topic lock is set, only channel operators can change the topic.

When to use it

The topic is the line shown above the messages of a channel. Everyone who joins reads it first. Lock it when the topic carries rules, links or an announcement that should not be edited by any member.

Usage

/mode +t Enable topic lock
/mode -t Disable topic lock

The command changes the channel you are looking at. You do not type the channel name.

How it works

  • Without the lock, any member of the channel can set a new topic with /topic.
  • With the lock, only owners and operators can change it. Half-operators, voiced users and regular members get an error.
  • Anyone in the channel can still read the topic. The command with no text shows it: /topic

Channel Central

Operators can also open Channel Central, go to the Modes tab, tick Topic Lock and choose Apply Modes.

Rules and limits

  • Only channel operators and owners can turn the lock on or off.
  • A new channel starts without the lock. In a registered channel the lock and the topic are saved and come back after a restart.
