+i Invite Only

Restrict channel access to invited users; non-members can request access from Channel List.

When invite-only is set, users cannot join unless they are invited by an operator. In Channel List, invite-only rows show a +i badge; non-members see Request Access... instead of Join and can send a knock request with an optional message.

When to use it

Use it for a closed group, such as a team, a staff room or a private game table. Every new member needs an operator to say yes first.

Usage

/mode +i Enable invite only
/mode -i Disable invite only
/invite Alice Invite Alice to the current channel
/knock #channel Hello! Ask the operators to let you in

How it works

  • Operators and owners can invite people. Half-operators cannot. The invited person must be online and not already in the channel.
  • An invitation adds the nickname to the channel's invite exceptions. That nickname can then join for as long as the exception exists. An operator can remove it at any time.
  • Anyone else who tries to join is refused with a message that the channel is invite-only.
  • A knock is shown only to operators and owners who are in the channel. You can knock on the same channel once per minute.

Channel Central

Operators can also open Channel Central, go to the Modes tab, tick Invite Only and choose Apply Modes.

Rules and limits

  • Only channel operators and owners can set or remove this mode.
  • People already in the channel are not removed.
  • An invitation does not replace a key or get around a user limit.
  • In a registered channel the mode and the invite exceptions are saved and come back after a restart.
