When set, only users who have identified with NickServ can join the channel. Users already in the channel when +R is set are not affected.
When to use it
Use it to keep out guests and throwaway nicknames. A registered nickname is protected by a password, so the same name always belongs to the same person. This makes bans and access lists more reliable, and it slows down spam from new names.
Usage
/mode +R Enable registered-only mode /mode -R Disable registered-only mode
The letter is an upper case R. The command changes the channel you are looking at. You do not type the channel name.
How it works
- When someone tries to join, the server checks whether they are identified with NickServ right now.
- A guest, or a person using a registered nickname without identifying, is refused with a message that the channel needs a registered nickname.
- To get in, register your nickname with NickServ, identify, and then join again.
Rules and limits
- Only channel operators and owners can set or remove this mode.
- The check runs only when someone joins.
- In a registered channel the mode is saved and comes back after a restart.
