Makes the channel private. Private channels appear in the channel list but with the name shown as "Prv" to non-members, hiding the actual channel name. Mutually exclusive with +s (secret).
When to use it
Use it when it is fine for people to know that a room exists, but its name and topic should not be advertised. If the channel should not appear in the list at all, use secret mode instead.
Usage
/mode +p Make channel private /mode -p Remove private mode
The command changes the channel you are looking at. You do not type the channel name.
What others see
- In the Channel List, people who are not in the channel see a placeholder row with the number of users. The name and the topic are not shown.
- Members of the channel see the real name and topic as usual.
- Share links and link previews do not show the channel name.
- Private mode does not hide the channel from whois or the hover card. Use secret mode if the name must not appear there.
Rules and limits
- Only channel operators and owners can set or remove this mode.
- Private mode does not stop anyone from joining. A person who types the name can still enter.

A channel cannot be private and secret at the same time. To switch, remove secret mode first, then set private mode:
/mode -s/mode +p - In a registered channel the mode is saved and comes back after a restart.
