History
ScummVM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion Virtual Machine) began in 2001 as a project to run LucasArts adventure games on modern systems. It has since grown to support over 300 games across dozens of engines, from Sierra's AGI/SCI to Revolution Software's Virtual Theatre. The games available here — from Beneath a Steel Sky to Flight of the Amazon Queen — represent the golden age of point & click adventures (1992–1996).
Gameplay Tips
- Click on everything — Adventure games reward thorough exploration. Look at, pick up, and talk to everything you can.
- Save often — Use F5 to save your progress. Some puzzles have time limits or points of no return.
- Combine inventory items — If you're stuck, try combining items in your inventory. The solution is often creative.
- Talk to everyone twice — NPCs sometimes have new dialogue after story events. Exhaust all conversation options.
Did You Know?
- Beneath a Steel Sky (1994) was made freeware by Revolution Software in 2003 — it was one of the first commercial games given away for free by its creators.
- ScummVM's name references SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion), the engine LucasArts created for their classic adventures starting in 1987.
- Lure of the Temptress (1992) pioneered the "Virtual Theatre" system where NPCs moved independently through the game world — a remarkably advanced concept for its time.
